Mistakes People Make Trying To Recover A RAID Array

July 22nd, 2009 No comments

Warning:  Attempting to recover a RAID array using any of the
methods below can result in permanent data loss and damage
to the RAID array making data recovery more difficult.

OPERATING SYSTEM RELOAD
REBUILD RAID DRIVES
RUNNING THE CHECKDISK UTILITY
RECONFIGURE THE RAID ARRAY
USING DATA RECOVERY SOFTWARE
REINITIALIZE RAID ARRAY
REFORMAT DRIVES IN THE ARRAY

RAID data recovery is an extremely complex type of recovery
that requires much experience and expertise with how RAID
arrays work.  If you have a RAID failure, it is best if you do not
try to recover the RAID yourself using "quick fix" techniques or
"off-the-shelf" data…

What RAID modes are recoverable on the WD ShareSpace drive?

July 15th, 2009 1 comment

All WD ShareSpace drives support Spanning, RAID-0 (Striping), RAID-1 (Mirroring), and RAID-5 (Redundancy with parity). Each RAID mode may or may not be available for usage based upon how many internal hard drives are installed in the enclosure.

Please Note:   Depending on how the WD ShareSpace RAID is setup, that RAID array may not be recoverable from a drive failure.

Qty of 2 – 1TB internal hard drives:

  • RAID-0 – 2TB – (Not recoverable)
  • RAID-1 – 1TB – (Recoverable)
  • RAID-5 – (Not Supported)

Qty of 3 – 1TB internal hard drives:

  • Spanning – 3TB – (Non recoverable)
  • RAID-0 – 3TB – (Non recoverable)
  • RAID-1 – (Not Supported)…

System Recovery Procedures for the NAS 4100

July 13th, 2009 No comments

Identifying hard drive failures and RAID regeneration times for the NAS 4100.

Overview: The NAS 4100 comes with 4 separate hard drives. In the event of a hard drive failure you will be notified via an Email alert and/or Web UI. RAID regeneration can take up to 30 minutes depending on which drive has failed.
To check status of your NAS 4100 drives use Logical Disk Manager. To access the Disk Management utility:

  1. Open “MaxNeighborhood” and double-click on the NAS 4100 that you want to create the folder on.
  2. Login to NAS 4100 with the appropriate Administrator (or Administrator equivalent) username and password.
  3. Click on "Administer…

Security Erase process for OneTouch III Turbo drives

July 13th, 2009 No comments

I have my OneTouch III Turbo connected via Firewire and I’m unable to use the Security Erase function.

Please note, Security Erase process only supports OneTouch III Turbo drive when the following two conditions are met:
1. Drive connected to USB interface
2. Drive is in Raid 0 mode. Running Security Erase in Raid 1 mode could cause the drive to be corrupted at the end of the erase process.
The software will reject the request and prompt user with a message when security erase process was attempted with 1394 interface cable.

How to create a RAID 0 (striped) array using the WD SATA RAID controller and two SATA drives

July 10th, 2009 No comments

Note: A RAID 0 array is not fault tolerant. It is recommended that you backup any important data that you decide to store on the array.
To create a RAID 0 array please follow the steps below:raid 0

  1. With the computer powered off, follow the instructions for installing the RAID controller correctly and connect both Serial ATA hard drives to the controller.
  2. Boot your computer with the controller and drives already installed.
  3. Watch your boot screens for a prompt that will ask you to press the Control and F keys at the same time to enter the Fastbuild utility and press those keys to enter.
  4. Press the 1 key to enter…

Raid 1+0 Failure

June 19th, 2009 No comments

raid 1+0 HELP! I have a raid 1+0 failure and stripe data is gone. I don’t even know where to start to reconstruct. I am running an Asus m2n32-sli Motherboard with 4 drives. TIA

Relax. You should have 100% redundancy. SalvageData has a RAID recovery tool that has had good reports.

More details would be welcome. What does the RAID BIOS say ? Does RAID BIOS detect the array and its members? Have you tried to rebuild the array in RAID BIOS?
