Overview: The standard configuration for a NAS 6000 base unit includes two user volumes, each supporting up to 960GB of raw storage capacity for a total of 1.9TB. In a RAID 5 configuration, the usable capacity is 723 GB on the first volume and 768 GB on the second. This document describes the optimal way to reconfigure this user space into a single 1.5 TB user volume (base unit only), or up to a 4.43 TB user volume on a fully configured MaxAttach NAS 6000 (base unit plus two expansion units).
The NAS 6000 base unit contains twelve 160GB hard disks. This…
My Macintosh (running Apple OS 8.6 – 9.2.2) freezes during system startup when my 1394 Personal Storage/External Storage drive is attached to the FireWire port.
This error happens if you installed the optional Maxtor FireSCSI Extension Set at the same time you installed the Maxtor Utilities.
At the Apple Menu choose: Control Panels / Extensions Manager. From the View menu, select as Items. Click on the Name column (near the top of the Extensions Manager window). This will lists extensions in alphabetical order. Find the following extensions and uncheck each one to disable it from loading:
- FireSCSI Expert
- FireSCSI Maxtor Enabler
- FireSCSI RBC RAID Enabler…

I have my OneTouch III Turbo connected via Firewire and I’m unable to use the Security Erase function.
Please note, Security Erase process only supports OneTouch III Turbo drive when the following two conditions are met:
1. Drive connected to USB interface
2. Drive is in Raid 0 mode. Running Security Erase in Raid 1 mode could cause the drive to be corrupted at the end of the erase process.
The software will reject the request and prompt user with a message when security erase process was attempted with 1394 interface cable.
Overview:
This Knowledge Base article describes a specific RAID reconfiguration; it describes how to re-configure the arrays using a Mylex Spanning feature to create a single 1.45 TB user volume spanned across Arrays 0 and 1 without a performance reduction. This procedure is data destructive for both user volumes. This procedure does not require the use of any special service tools. This procedure does not require system downtime, but the performance of the system will be affected significantly for about 10 minutes. System performance will also be slightly reduced for about 30 hours during the “background” creation of the redundant data…
What is Seagate BlackArmor and how does it differ from Maxtor BlackArmor?
The name BlackArmor was first introduced in 2008 as a portable Full Disc Encryption drive, however, at that time it was termed the Maxtor BlackArmor. Now we are extending the use of that product name under the Seagate brand. Seagate BlackArmor is now the family name for a suite of storage solutions packaged for small business. The Seagate BlackArmor NAS 440 and Seagate BlackArmor NAS 420 network storage servers are just the first two solutions in what will be a complete lineup of BlackArmor products, to include 4 Bay,…

A comparison of usable drive space to physical disk drive capacity.
Overview: There are two main factors affecting your total system storage capacity:
- RAID Overhead
- Conversion between Binary and Decimal Byte “Equivalents”
In some cases, the overhead is 50% of the total hard drive capacity.
Comparing Binary and Decimal Equivalents:
The following Table charts common Binary/Decimal Values:
RAID Overhead:
With Raid 1 (Mirror) or Raid 5 (Strip Set with Parity), a certain portion of the disk space will be used for redundancy thus it will not show up as usable space.
Example of NAS 6000 Capacity Calculations:
The NAS 6000 base unit has twelve 160 GB hard…
The NAS 4000 Series is a file server. Maxtor highly recommends you make backups of the NAS, as you would with any server.
